About Madelyn McCraney of Kuumba Art Design Studio
I create art using bright, brilliant, and bold colors. I enjoy painting patterns found in and inspired by Africa, motivated by a deep connection to my heritage and ancestry. My work aims to cultivate and celebrate the beauty of all women, especially black women and depict them in day-to-day life with their families.
A primary material in my work is burlap. I chose to use burlap after encountering a burlap bag depicting a racist figure. My intent in using burlap is to reclaim the material by using it to build collections celebrating ethnic diversity and cultures.
I have discovered that art is a bridge of diversity, and it opens doors to foster relationships across cultures and geographies. Bridging the diversity gap is what inspires me to be an artist and create work. I attended The Art Institute of Houston and am a retired art instructor currently residing in Houston, Texas.
